Day 3 of Juice Fast/Feast

Hiya everyone! I just wanted to do a quick post to tell you about my day 3. It was so much better!! :) No headaches today...I think it was more like a migraine yesterday just terrible. Today I woke up in a good mood and could tell that I felt different. In good spirits and everything.

I'm sure I didn't drink enough today. I think that I only had a total of 32 oz of juice today and 64oz of water. I know it's not enough but I did eat a little something for dinner. So I can't technically say that I'm "fasting" so maybe I'll call it a juice "feast." Regardless, I'm eating (drinking) WAYYYYY more fruits and veggies than normal and I'm giving my digestive system somewhat of a break. So I'm happy! Plus I never would drink this much water. My bathroom trips have slowed down some, but maybe that's because I'm not drinking as much as I did yesterday...IDK. I'm still going pretty regular but more like every hour instead of every 20 min. like yesterday.

Dinner tonight was a baked sweet potatoe. I'm so proud of myself because I normally load it down with butter, cinnamon, and white sugar...but tonight I only sprinkled a little bit of cinnamon and had 1 packet of raw turbinado sugar...I repeat 1 packet! That required a lot of self-control for me. I know that I have a major sugar and carb addiction bad, bad, bad. However my sweet potatoe was delicious! I think not eating food all day wakens up your taste buds and everything has so much more flavor. I also had about 8oz of a green veggie juice after eating my sweet potatoe and I must say I'm pretty full. Right now it's 9:30pm and I'm going to finish up my jar of water and do some reading.

I tried to post a picture of my dinner but I can't figure out how to do that yet from this iPad, so maybe tomorrow. Technology Gheesh! 

Oh I almost forgot to tell you...I made an exciting purchase today!! And now I'm going to leave you hanging...ha ha stay tuned!

Days 1 and 2 of Juice Feast/Fast

I will recap my feelings about Days 1 & 2 of me juicing..soooo...it can only get better.

Day 1 I started out excited and ready to go. But as the day progressed I started feeling really sluggish and wanted to eat so bad! My brain was kinda in a fog and it still is because I can't remember much about the day except that I was miserable and in the bathroom every 20minutes. On to day 2!

Day 2 Migraine all day and still have it currently as I type and it's 7:30pm. I woke up with a headache, but decided that I was going to tough it out because the day had to go on right?! Wrong! I got up juiced enough for breakfast and lunch packed everything up and left home to go through with my day but after 30minutes I had to turn around and come home and get in the bed. Major detoxing going on over here. I thought that I needed something with some substance to eat so I went in the kitchen around 1pm and cut up some pineapple and strawberries...but couldn't eat it. Looking at it made me nauseous. So I hope tomorrow is a better day.

I will share with you my reasons for juicing in the future when my head clears. Hope everyone is well. Pleas excuse any typos or rumblings...I'm not in the mood to proofread.

Peach & Chamomile Tea Soaps and A "Little" Snow Here in SC

So yesterday was a busy day in our soap kitchen. I had some custom orders of foaming hand soap to do, bottle up some facial serum and then I made two batches of soap. One was a restock of "Chamomile Tea" and the other was a Peach scent that I really like...still debating on what to call that one. I'm thinking either "Southern Peach" or "Carolina Peach" whatcha think?

I cut both batches this morning. Just have to clean up the bars a little and put them on the shelf to cure. They will be ready in a few weeks. Let me know if you would like to reserve a bar. Now I'm working on labels and trying to conjure up in my head what's next in our soap kitchen.

 

 

It's a rainy day in South Carolina today, but believe it or not some of us saw SNOW on Saturday night! Actually it kinda scared me for a minute because it started thundering in the midst of all that snow falling, but I heard that's called "thunder snow". It was almost like a little mini blizzard outside. It was soooo windy and the snow was blowing sideways! Yeah...it was a bit much for this southern girl. It was all just about gone on Sunday afternoon after the sun came out (just the way I like it). I must say we've been fortunate enough to have a pretty mild winter this year. So if you've been dealing with the winter blues just remember...SPRING IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER! Just give  it another month or so...

Organizing Goals for 2013

Goals are essential because it gives your life direction. You have something to work toward instead of just haphazardly going through life with the attitude "whatever happens...happens".

 

 Here is the YouTube Video that I referenced in my last blog post. She is superb with home organizing tips and I love the points and ideas that she has here on setting goals and keeping track of them. I think someone commented under the video that you can use Microsoft Word and create a table with 2 columns and 23 rows to get your sheet set-up. And then just color code everything to your preference.

Yep...it's me...AND I'M BACK!!

Heeelllloooo to all of my faithful blog readers!!! Yes it's been a long time...I'm actually kinda embarassed that I haven't posted anything in so long! It's funny how I always start out each year saying "I'm going to do better with my business, blog, website, etc." "I'm re-focused and motivated"!! Ha ha...every year same oh same oh. Well I am saying the same thing this year!

This is my make it or break it year. I told my husband that I would devote my time and energy into this business this year and if it didn't work out by the end of 2013 I would close up shop and just have a "hobby". So this is my year to make it work.

 

 

I have so many goals for this year. Personal, Financial, Spiritual, Business, etc. So my plan is to organize my goals on a spreadsheet and then hang them up and reevaluate them every Quarter. I got this idea from Youtube vlogger that I follow. I'll have to find her name and let you know. But anywhoo...evaluating my goals every quarter will help to keep me on track (hopefully) and then I can cross some things off my list or add more goals.

So for the next couple of days I will be working on writing all of my goals down on paper. I have had my spiritual goals written down since September...so now I'll just expand that to my Business. That way I can be balanced. I feel like I've rambled on and on in this post. So my next post will be more focused. It's late...I had this bright idea to eat some super sweet peach cobbler around 12am...and now I'm beginning to think that wasn't such a good idea :)

New Website currently in the works...

Hi everyone! Just thought I'd check in for a bit and tell you what I've been up to today. It's kind of cold & chilly here in SC today! We've had a really mild winter so I really can't complain much about the weather.

 I am currently working on a new website so that is taking up sooo much of my time. I would love to be making soap today. However...this is a necessity. I decided to go back to a website with a shopping cart because I think that will make things a lot easier for me & my customers. So instead of emailing me or calling with your orders you can go ahead and place your order right from the website and it will direct you to paypal to pay at the end of your transaction. No worries, you don't have to create a paypal account to pay, you can just pay as a guest if you'd like it's a very secure website. Now if you have to pay using a check or money order then you still need to email me at carolinasoapco@yahoo.com 

I haven't quite figured out if there's a way to bypass the paypal checkout. Also, your paypal receipt will say "Miranda's Collection" and it's fine that us: Carolina Soap Company. I just need to change the name.

Oh! I almost forgot to tell you that I did go ahead and discount the "Oceanfront" soap that didn't turn out as planned. It's listed on the website for $2.50! If you'd like to try it hurry b/c there are only about 7 bars to go around at that price. I do have a confession: I've been using this soap for the past 3 weeks or so and I love it. So that's why it's only 7 more bars left. I'm going to try and contain myself and sell those bars.

Oceanfront doesn't look too bad considering what happened to this batch. So I'm pleased. :o)

To read about what happened read my previous post here. I will more than likely sell this batch for a discounted price since I'm not 100% pleased with the outcome. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the soap, it smells good and still lathers up well just like my other soaps. Just not pleased with the "look".

Yesterday's Soaping Adventures (Chamomile, Oceanfront and Lavender Eucalyptus Soaps)

See I kept my promise...I'm back! So like I told you all yesterday I made 3 batches of soap: Chamomile, Oceanfront, and Lavender Eucalyptus. I was so excited to be back in the kitchen soaping after a little hiatus I did all my prep work the night before so I was ready to go come 6am.  

My first batch came out wonderful! That was the Chamomile.

Isn't it pretty and soothing looking?! I put chamomile flowers throughout the entire batch and then sprinkled a few flower buds on the top. I'm pleased with the way this one came out so we'll see how it looks when I cut the bars down to size. It smells absolutely wonderful, I love Chamomile Tea and this smells just like it! Very relaxing. I'm not sure what to call this one so any suggestions would be welcomed! I wanted something more than "just" Chamomile. Maybe "Relaxing Chamomile Tea"? I don't know...let me know what you think. Either on Facebook or below in the comments section.

OK those are lovely so on to my second batch. "Oceanfront" was inspired by my love of the beach. Especially Myrtle Beach, SC -- if you've never been you should go it's one of the best beaches IMO....but I may be a little partial :o)

Anywho back to my soap...I had a great soap planned. It was suppose to be White with blue swirls throughout (kind of ocean inspired) with a blue/white swirl on top. Not too fancy but pretty ya know. As I mixed my oils, fragrance, and lye solution together the mixture STARTED TO SEIZE!!

Now for all of you who are not soapmakers and you don't know what that means. The best way I can describe it is the soap begins to thicken up quickly (really almost instantly in this case) and it's more like the consistency of applesauce or thick mashed potatoes. Everything started to immediately separate and not blend together. You should have seen me screaming!! "Drama Queen" I know! I immediately poured it into the mold and pushed it down in there trying to smooth the top to make it look decent. Went back to check on it like 15-20 minutes later and it literally was like a mold full of oil...all separated. As you will see below I then dumped the soap out of the mold and into my crockpot. I decided to slow cook it and then put it in a round mold with the hopes that it can be salvaged somewhat. We'll see later when I unmold it how it turned out.

LESSON THAT I  LEARNED: When working with new fragrances or essential oils remember to do a "small" test batch so that you don't waste your ingredients if all doesn't go as planned. :o)

I will  make an attempt at my dream "Oceanfront" soap again. I may need to find another combination of scents though.

So now on to my 3rd batch. I was a little nervous about mixing this one up even though I've made my Lavender Eucalyptus soap TONS of times! But I was beginning to doubt my skills. I waited about 30 minutes and then attempted it. This one came out beautiful as usual. I tried to leave most of it cream colored this time and only a small portion on the top is lavender, so I'm also anxious to see how this one turned out once the bars are cut!



So those were my soaping adventures yesterday. I will unmold and cut these down today and report back to you all! Thank you for reading and listening to my soap rambles! Until next time...

Hiya Everyone!! I'm still around :o)

Where has the time gone?! This year has truly flown by! Wow, this is all going to take some used to again. I've been MIA  for a while now on my blog and I am so sorry to those of you who follow my blog and wonder "when in the world is she going to post something"? LOL...TODAY is the day! Yeah I'm so sad :o)

Seriously though my goal for 2012 is to at least make a blogpost once a week. Hopefully more, but for now that seems like a realistic goal to me.

Lots to do before the end of the year, which is only 3 days away. I've got lots of new things planned for 2012. We did home parties this year and plan to do the same next year as well as participate in a few more craft shows. New products, designs, changes to our website, newsletter, more youtube videos on our channel...you get the idea. I will definitely be asking for your input as we make necessary changes and I want to say to you all thank you so much for your support throughout the years. Next month will be our 7th Anniversary in this business journey and we look forward to growing a lot more!

I have soo much to tell you all, so what I'm going to do is organize everything by subject and then make seperate posts. I will start with the soaps I poured today and what I learned in that experience (hint hint:  seizing soap). I just finished making a Chamomile soap  (haven't decided on a name), Lavender Eucalyptus, and Ocean (long story on Ocean). That will all post tomorrow with pictures. Paula's Fried Peanut Butter & Banana Sandwich (Review)

I know, I know...this has absolutely nothing to do with soap. But I think this year I will blog about other things too that interest me. I am a food and recipe junkie. I love looking at the food network and the other cooking channel and occasionally trying something different. So, about an hour ago I decided to try this Paula Deen recipe I saw on one of her episodes the other day. It's pretty simple and most people have these ingredients on hand in their kitchen. So I will just give you guys my review of this and you can determine for yourselves whether or not you want to give it a try.

I did not follow this recipe to the "t". I used creamy peanut butter instead of crunchy and omitted the honey. I only made one sandwich so I'm not sure about the amounts I just eyeballed everything to my liking. I also used a firm banana b/c I didn't want it too mushy. Fried in a cast iron frying pan a couple of minutes on each side and Mmmmmmm...finally toss in cinnamon sugar and done. I paired this with a cup of Giradelli Hazelnut Hot Chocolate and it was the perfect combination. 1st bite - creamy peanut butter oozing out with a crunchy buttery bread. However when I got to the last 2 bites I must admit I was a little tired of the bananas, but my bread was still nice and crunchy. (just being honest)

Next time I may just leave the banana out or just put it on half of the sandwich.

 If you don't like things too sweet just don't coat your sandwich in sugar at the end. Personally I had no problem with the sugar:) Now this is not something you want to eat every day. An occasional splurge is OK but I read in one of the other reviews this sandwich is 800 calories, not sure how accurate that is but gauging from all the butter and sugar that's probably about right.

I was actually pleasantly surprised that I actually liked the combination. Well butter and sugar makes just about anything taste good :) And we know Paula loves her butta'! I hate I didn't take a picture of mine b/c my sandwich actually looked better than this in my opinion. Maybe the cast iron skillet had something to do with that. Let me know your thoughts on this if you decide give it a try! Recipe is below:

"Paula's Fried Peanut Butter & Banana Sandwich"

Ingredients

1/2 cup butter, softened

3/4 cup crunchy peanut butter

3 tablespoons honey

1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

2 to 3 ripe bananas

8 slices white bread

Topping:

1/4 cup sugar

1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

Directions:

In a frying pan, melt 3 tablespoons of the butter. Make sure butter does not burn. In a small bowl mix together the peanut butter, honey, and cinnamon. Slice the bananas into 1/4-inch thick slices. Spread the peanut butter mixture on 4 slices of bread and cover with banana slices. Top with the remaining 4 slices of bread. Spread the remaining butter on both sides of the sandwiches. Grill the sandwiches in the frying pan until each side is golden brown.

For topping, combine the sugar and cinnamon in shallow plate. Coat the grilled sandwiches with the mixture. Cut diagonally and serve hot.

Coconut Milk Soap (what a mess)

Soooo....I guess I haven't gotten the hang of soaping with coconut milk. I have no earthly idea what happened to this batch of soap. Maybe I measured something wrong, I don't know! Mixing the coconut milk with the lye was a little tricky. That may have been my mistake. All I know is it came out an oily mess!! Smells good though.:)

This is the ugliest soap I have ever made. I have used probably only 2 bars of this loaf, I just think it's so ugly I can't bear to take it in the shower with me LOL These pictures are when I first made it back in September (I think) it's even uglier now.

Just thought I would share this ugly soap with my blog readers in case you guys needed a laugh today :-) I will be trying to learn how to rebatch this batch of soap. I've never rebatched before but I guess now is as good a time as any to learn. Live & Learn.

Look at the oil just running out! I must have measured something wrong. But it still lathers up really well in the shower and it's creamy too.

Lavender Eucalyptus & Beer Soap

I just love the smell of this lavender eucalyptus soap. It's such a relaxing blend. Whenever I have a bad headache or sinus cold, I just unwrap a bar of this beauty, get me a bath bomb in the same scent and soak! It does wonders...I always feel like a new person. Even if I don't want to take the time to wait on bath water in the shower just putting the hot bath towel over your face really helps.

What is Soap?

What really is "soap"?

You would be surprised how many people really "think" they know the answer to that question. LOL I must admit...before I started researching and reading, reading, reading...I thought that I was really using good soap, when actually they were just "moisturizing or cleansing bars". Go figure! Why not read the label of your soap and see what it says. Many commercial manufactures use strong fragrances to cover up the harsh chemical smell of their "soap" (I guess that's why some of them smell so good) Handmade/crafted soap smells so much milder and better though.

Only when a product has been created through saponification can it be called soap. Saponification  is the chemical process that occurs when fats/oils are mixed with distilled water and sodium hydroxide (lye) to create soap & glycerin. The root word "sapo" is Latin for soap and the Italian word "sapone" means soap. There are many ways and a variety of oils, butters, fragrances, and additive combinations used to make soap, but the basic formula will always be the same:  fats or oils, distilled water, and sodium hydroxide (lye).

One of the joys I've found in soap making is creating my own unique recipe. It's time consuming but so much fun! Each oil and butter has specific properties to aid in producing a well balanced soap recipe. The combination I use depends on how I want my unique bar of soap to turn out! Sometimes the recipe doesn't work out so good on the 1st try and sometimes it does...it's just like with a recipe I may experiment with in the kitchen to cook....just fine tune it (add a little more of this or that) and try again, that's all.  


I write everything down like it's a master plan or something! Well, I guess it IS my master plan...and I guard my recipes with my life! lol (I'm exaggerating ok ) But seriously I don't give out recipes that have taken me a long time to create...just buy the bar of soap it's so much easier :-)

My mom used to always go to the whole foods market and buy handmade soap and I would be like "you're going to spend $5 on one bar of soap when you could get a whole pack for that??!!" How soon did I learn that it was so much better & nourishing for my skin with such a creamy fluffy lather. My skin is so worth it -- and yours is too! Try a bar of handmade soap and you're guaranteed to fall in love! ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

June Update

OK, so I seriously needed to update this blog! Blogging is hard for me because it just seems like mindless rambling and I often wonder if anyone even reads this...however, I will try to continue. I have been so busy these past few months. I've been working on lots of gift baskets and gift bags and formulating recipes. Welcomed my new little niece into the world in March! That was the highlight of my spring, she's so beautiful! I will post her hospital picture since that's on a public hospital website that should be fine. I've been busy with that among other things that I will refrain from mentioning! I have been working some.... I will share my birth announcment hand sanitizers a little later. I made a moisturizing Almond Cherry soap that will be ready this week. And I made up some more lip balms! Lip balms are in 9 great flavors (listed below)! You can also order them unflavored. They are made with shea butter, cocoa butter, mango butter, coconut oil, beeswax, grapeseed, oil, jojoba oil, and vitamin E. All things great for the lips :-)

Created a New Banner

I just played around some more and created a new banner for my etsy shop and blog. What do you guys think?

IT SNOWED

Well.....IT SNOWED!! I just had to post the pictures since I didn't believe that we were really going to get anything. I love looking at freshly fallen snow b/c it looks like a clean blanket on everything. Here in Winnsboro I believe we got about 5 inches of snow they may have gotten more in Columbia I'm not sure. These are just a couple of pictures my sister sent me...my camera is broken so I couldn't take any pictures of my yard. My husband took a few with his camera phone so I'll see if I can figure out how to put those on here.

Snow in South Carolina?? We'll see..

We may get snow in SC today!!! What is it about the south that makes even the threat of snow so exciting? I went to the grocery store to get some olive oil to make a batch of soap and it was total CRAZINESS! People are in there buying up all the bread and milk. I must admit I was guilty of picking up a loaf of bread LOL but I really needed it. ;-) Two or three inches of snow would do me just fine and then it'll be gone in a day or two.

According to the news reports it should have already started snowing by now (3:52 pm). But I have not seen the first snow flake. Everyone is so excited I hope we're not disappointed. We'll See...

In the meantime I will be working on labels for 2 different clients and making a few batches of soap.

Baby Shower Favors

I had a super busy weekend but I enjoyed it so much! I was able to help with my sister's baby shower and it turned out really nice. She got so many cute itty bitty clothes. And to end the weekend with a bang I went to a super bowl party ( GO SAINTS!!!) I loved being with family and friends the entire weekend. I laughed so hard until I cried!

I was able to do the favors for the shower and I think they turned out rather nicely. We had 50 hand sanitizers and 50 candles (recycled baby food jars) and they ALL went. I hope everyone enjoys them. ;-) The pink candles were scented in Geranium Lily and the lavender was scented in Lilac. Enjoy the pictures!

Beer Soap & Coconut Lime Verbena

OK, so today I woke up with an EXCRUCIATING migraine. I haven't had one of those in a long time. I could barely stand up, but the one thing that got me up after about two hours of taking an excedrin is this: realizing that I had soap to unmold. Yay! I love unmolding and cutting my soap bars down. It's exciting seeing what the final bars look like. Well sometimes and other times it can be a real pain in the butt. My hubby always comes to my rescue when I'm in the kitchen screaming at a mold! Why oh why are pvc soaps so difficult to unmold. Makes you wonder why do I keep using the pvc pipes?? Weeelll, because I love round bars of soap. I think they fit nicely into male or female hands and it's probably just my imagination but I think they last longer too.

So, yesterday I made two batches of soap. (1) A beer soap scented with apple and (2) a coconut lime verbena soap. I'll post pictures soon. They smell wonderful.

It's funny I'm using beer in my soap and I don't even drink the stuff. I've always thought it was nasty but that just my personal opinion. So why beer in soap? Well I wondered the same thing when I first ran across people using beer in their soap. It's really rather nice and nostalgic. It has all the butters and oils as my other soaps (cocoa, shea, coconut, olive, canola, safflower, etc.) so it really is nice and luxurious lather on the skin. And depending on which beer I'm using sometimes it's a nice natural scent of the hops coming through.

I personally prefer mine with some other fragrance but that's just the girlie side of me ;-) Great for your hair or shaving too! So why just drink beer when you can bathe with it too! Men really love it! These two particular batches need to cure about 4 weeks and then they will be ready to sell and list on our website for $5 bucks a piece.
